How common is bullying at work?

Research published by the TUC today in 2015 shows that nearly a third of people have been bullied at work.

The poll – carried out by YouGov for the TUC showed that:

  • nearly a third of people (29%) have been bullied at work;
  • women are more likely to be victims of bullying than men ((34% compared with 23% have been);
  • the highest prevalence of workplace bullying is among 40 to 59-year-olds, where 34% of people are affected;
  • in nearly three-quarters (72%) of cases the bullying is carried out by a manager; and
  • more than one in three (36%) people who report being bullied at work leave their job because of it.

The 2016 TUC survey of safety reps reported that almost half (48%) of safety representatives put bullying down as one of their top five concerns (compared with 46% in 2014).

It found that the rise over the last two years has all taken place in the public sector, cited by 53% of safety representatives there compared with 43% in the private sector. Bullying/harassment is a particular problem in leisure services, where it is the top concern, and in central government and education. It is more of a problem in larger workplaces (with 200 or more employees) than smaller ones.
