There is no specific 'anti-bullying' law in the UK. But other laws can offer some protection:
- If the harassment or bullying relates to one of the characteristics protected under the Equality Act 2010, consider a claim for discrimination.
- Otherwise, you may be able to bring a claim for constructive dismissal. This is a high risk strategy with many potential pitfalls. (See What if I walk out because I can't stand it?)
- In an extreme case, you may have a personal injury claim or a claim under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.
There are strict deadlines for legal claims so it is essential to get legal advice as soon as possible. See our section on Getting Help.
Deadlines in employment tribunals are particularly short – only three months – and these timeframes are rarely extended, so take advice without delay.
