What can I do about PMS?

You need to see your GP, take dietary advice, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, find ways to cope at work, and, possibly, receive clinical treatment.

Shopworkers' union USDAW has issued a pamphlet Pre-menstrual syndrome and period pains. Its recommendations include:

  • taking Vitamin B6 and Evening Primrose Oil. These can be taken in tablet form. Whole grains, yeast, peanuts, fresh fish and meat, especially liver, are sources of Vitamin B6;
  • focusing on diet and getting fresh fruit and vegetables, eating less meat and more non-meat protein, like fish, cheese and eggs; and
  • getting support for yourself from those around you so that they understand how you feel and what they can do to support you.
