Could the laser in my checkout damage my eyes?

Most laser 'Electronic Point of Sale' (EPS) systems used by high street retailers are what is known as class 1 laser products, which will not harm your eyes. Class 2 and 3a systems, which may be used in the warehouse for stock control or by wholesalers not open to the public, can cause eye damage, but only if your eyes' pupils are not working properly. Your scanner should be labelled with its laser class.

However, even a class 1 laser EPS system can be dangerous if it is faulty, has been damaged, or has been dismantled for maintenance.

Your employer should include the EPS system in their risk assessments under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
