Monsoon Accessorize has topped the latest list of 115 companies to be named and shamed for paying workers less than the minimum wage. At the TUC, we’re pleased that the government is continuing to expose employers who are failing to meet their legal obligations on pay, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. We estimate at least 250,000 workers and three-quarters of minimum wage cheats are still getting off scot-free.
“The government must continue to increase enforcement of the minimum wage, and ensure that all workers get what they are owed,” says TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady. “Bosses who try to duck the minimum wage should have nowhere to hide.”
Are you getting what you’re entitled to?
The current National Minimum Wage hourly rates are set at £6.70 if you are 21 or over, £5.30 in the 18-20 age bracket, and £3.87 if you are under 18 (see the GOV.UK website for rates for apprentices).
If your employer is paying you less than this, they have a case to answer. If you are worried about making a complaint directly to your employer, a union rep can make it on your behalf without naming and exposing you to the risk of potential reprisals (although you are legally protected against harassment by unscrupulous employers for exercising your right to complain). Unions are experts in negotiating pay issues. If there is no recognised union in your workplace, you may be able to join a union that covers your industry and ask for help from a union officer.
