What is homeworking?
The term homeworking can refer to:
- office workers who work from home with a computer. They can be home-based full-time, a couple of days a week or on an ad hoc basis;
- field sales reps or mobile workers who use home as a base and work offsite meeting customers, or going on site visits; and
- traditional outworkers who often make items for the footwear, textile or clothing industry
TUC analysis of ONS Labour Force Survey data shows that the number of employees who say they usually work from home has increased by a fifth (19%) over the past decade with well over 1.5 million employees now regularly working from home. When all homeworkers are counted the numbers go up even more dramatically: there are now 900,000 more homeworkers than there were in 2005, taking the total to over four million. These figures do not even include the millions of workers who work from home one or two days a week or just on an ad hoc basis.
