What are the advantages of homeworking?
Homeworking is one way to strike a better work–life balance and cut the daily cost and inconvenience of commuting.
Homeworking allows people to:
- save time and money from not having to commute;
- have an easier time combining caring responsibilities for the family; and
- work without distractions.
Homeworking also allows a greater number of people with disabilities to access the labour market as homeworking helps overcome the barrier of not being able to commute to an office. Around 650,000 people with a disability currently work from home.
Using figures from the ONS Labour Force Survey, the TUC found that the number of employees with daily commutes of two hours or more has shot up by nearly a third (31%) between 2010 and 2015. In 2015, 3.7 million workers had daily commutes of two hours or longer – an increase of 900,000 since 2010 (2.8 million).
