What are my employer's responsibilities?

This largely depends on the sort of work you are carrying out at home. 

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance for employers says they have similar obligations towards you whether you work at home or in an office. Most health and safety issues around homeworking are no different from those of conventional office working and will be classified as 'low risk'. But employers still need to be confident that the work really is low risk, and may need to carry out more detailed checks to establish this.

The key areas your employer should focus on are:

  • work equipment;
  • ensuring the work environment is safe for you and for anyone else living in the house; and
  • work-related stress, which can develop if someone feels isolated at home or is unable to separate their work and home life.
