Should my employer provide support and training on homeworking?
Yes. Your employer should:
- provide time management advice on separating your domestic and work commitments (e.g. childcare, hours of work, etc.), and schedule breaks into your working day to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders;
- provide advice on recognising the symptoms of repetitive strain injury (RSI) and reporting any symptoms at an early stage;
- install a work phone line, which you switch to an answerphone at the end of the working day;
- encourage regular contact with office-based staff through telephone calls and regular meetings; and
- take action if a homeworker appears to be suffering from stress due to isolation and give them regular opportunities to talk through any problems. If necessary they should be offered an alternative workplace.
