How can I prevent RSI?
Prevention is easier than cure. Even if you do not have any symptoms it is worth spending some time thinking about and adapting how you work to see if you can reduce some of the risk factors. For example:
- Adjust your workstation and the way you work (see How should I adjust my workstation?).
- Take proper breaks, and vary the tasks you do as much as possible (see Do I have the right to take a break?).
- Get into the habit of working safely.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Laboratory have developed the Assessment of Repetitive Tasks (ART) tool to help prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). It is aimed at workplaces where workers carry out repetitive tasks. The HSE says it can help identify where significant risks lie and help prioritise improvements.
