How can I get over the effects of a violent incident?

Violent attacks, threats or verbal abuse can leave you feeling shocked, isolated and confused. These serious events are called 'traumatic' incidents. Talking over what happened with someone who cares can really help. There are a number of common reactions to a traumatic incident. You may feel:

angry tense irritable
jumpy emotional restless
alone guilty tearful
anxious down tired
numb worthless depressed

You may relive the traumatic incident in flashbacks or nightmares. You may have problems with concentration, eating, sleeping or sex. All these reactions are normal and should begin to fade in a week or so after the incident. However, sometimes feelings do not go away, or they start at a later date. If so, you may be suffering from 'post-traumatic stress disorder', and may need further support. Start by speaking to your GP.

Prolonged exposure to bullying can also give rise to similar feelings.
