What is a healthcare cash plan?

In return for small weekly contributions (starting at under £2 a week), providers such as Westfield and Simply Health meet all or part of the cost of everyday healthcare essentials, such as:

  • dental and optical treatment;
  • physiotherapy; and
  • other specialist healthcare.

These are not-for-profit organisations, which define their role as supplementing, not competing with, the NHS. Employers support these schemes because they encourage their staff to keep in good health. Individuals join them, with the greatest use made of the dental and optical benefits and refunds on expenses.
