What is ill health retirement?
Ill health retirement may be necessary if you are permanently unable to do the job for which you were employed and no suitable alternative can be found. You are strongly advised to talk your situation over with your GP, and then with your employer's occupational health (OH) service if there is one, as well as your pension provider, before this decision is taken. The GP is likely to draw your attention to the psychological and financial consequences of retirement. If you are a member of a union, talk these issues through with your rep.
