What if I don't get a promotion?

If your manager turns down your request for promotion, make sure you understand why so that you can address any areas of work that you need to improve before they’ll consider you for promotion. You may even be able to agree specific steps with your manager to work towards it.

If you don’t agree with their assessment and are angry or frustrated, avoid making a knee-jerk reaction. The worst thing you can do is sulk, or worse still, resign in a fit of pique! Threatening to resign will only work if you really mean it, and even then it’s by no means guaranteed to change your manager’s mind. The best option may be simply to knuckle down and wait for the next time. At the very least, you'll have given them food for thought, and there’s nothing to stop you looking around for other jobs in the meantime.
