An employee can claim equal pay for 'like work', which is work that is the same or broadly similar to that done by a person of the opposite sex (a 'comparator') in the same establishment.
If the work is similar, but the pay between a man and woman is different, the difference must be for a reason unrelated to the sex of the two employees (otherwise it will be discriminatory). Such differences might include payment for extra responsibilities, long service and extra qualifications.
