However young or old you are, you have the right to challenge unfair age-related treatment at work. Under the Equality Act 2010, workers are protected against suffering less favourable treatment on the basis of their age when they are, for example, applying for a job or a promotion, concerned about their pay rates, taking advantage of workplace benefits such as holidays, redundancy or pensions, or considering their retirement options.
An employer cannot lawfully discriminate against you because of your age unless they can show that the discrimination is objectively justified. This means that the employer must have a good reason for the age-related treatment that would stand up to testing in an employment tribunal.
