What is a bargaining unit?

A bargaining unit is the group of workers for whom a trade union is requesting, or has been granted, recognition. When the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) is considering whether the bargaining unit is appropriate it has to ensure it is 'compatible with effective management'.
