What happens to my holiday rights while i am on adoption leave?

You continue building up holiday while on adoption leave, but you can’t take it while on leave. It is a good idea to talk to your employer about making arrangements to take this holiday. You can either take it before you start the adoption leave, or save it until the end.

Sometimes employees opt to end their adoption leave early (once the paid element of the leave has run out) and take annual leave instead, to maximise the amount of time spent at home with pay. Remember that you must give 28 days’ notice to your employer if you intend to end your adoption leave early and move over onto annual leave (holiday). Also, make sure you follow your employer’s rules about giving the right amount of notice to be allowed to take holiday. Check the policies that are in place where you work.

If you work full-time, you will accrue annual leave during your adoption leave on a full-time basis, even if you return to work part-time at the end of the adoption leave.
