How does employment law distinguish between the employment of children and young persons?

Children are defined, for employment purposes, as below compulsory school age. This is nominally 16 years of age, but may vary between 15 years and 8 months and 16 years and 7 months depending on the statutory school leaving date and the pupil's birthday.

A young person is a person whose age is above compulsory school age but below 18.
