Am I entitled to expenses for attending work at a different location?
There is no legal entitlement to be paid to relocate unless it is written into your contract. However, in United Bank v Akhtar IRLR 507, a requirement for an employee to relocate from Leeds to Birmingham the following week with no relocation expenses was held to be a breach of contract because the employee was unable to comply.
In other words, although there is no obligation to pay 'reasonable' expenses, an employer must not refuse to pay any expenses at all if this means that it is impossible for the employee to relocate.
If there is a union recognised where you work, your union rep may be able to negotiate relocation expenses, or alternative options such as spending part of the week working from home, taking on a different role that doesn't involve moving, or changing your hours or working pattern to make the commute less expensive and/or easier to combine with caring responsibilities.
