Often an employer will pay staff who work anti-social hours a higher wage than those who work normal office hours. Working early mornings, nights or weekends places a strain on the health of individuals and limits their chances to join in family and community life.
In recent years, working weekends in particular has come to be seen by some employers as normal. However, even where days off during the week are offered, weekend workers are missing out on an important shared time to relax and enjoy life.
Unfortunately, there is no legal entitlement to increased pay for working anti-social hours.
If you work anti-social hours you should think about joining together with others in the same situation (perhaps by inviting a union) to negotiate salary enhancements.
Once an extra payment is agreed, it should be recorded in writing and circulated to all those affected, as well as added to the contracts of all new starters.
